Tema Singles Open to Commence on August 4

The 3rd edition of the annual Tema Singles Open Tennis Championship has been scheduled for Saturday, August 4 to Saturday, September 1st, 2018, organizers have announced. As usual, GHACEM Tennis Club, TDC Tennis Club, Regional Maritime Tennis Club and TOR Tennis Club will host the one month tournament that assembles some of the finest veterans. They will compete in two major events including men’s 50 years above and the 50 years below categories. Speaking to onthelinegh.com , tournament coordinator, Ismailia Lamptey, said that matches would be played from 9am to 6pm on weekends.  ”I am hopeful for the quality and standard of this year’s competition to improve” he stressed on.  Mr. Ismailia, who doubles as a player, said this year’s edition will attract registration fee of GH¢50.  This year’s event will see the likes of Michael Adeda Foli, Fiifi Badu, Napoleon Woeli, Peter Asiedu, Alfred Otoo, Patrick Ansong, Thomas Hene-Effah and Patrick Addo ...

Antwi, Aleona win under 16 Championship

McDan, a loyal and committed brand who has supported the development of tennis in Ghana over the decades, now has been named a major sponsor of the upcoming International Tennis Federation Junior World Tour Futures event which will be hosted in Ghana from Saturday August 25th to September 1, 2018.   The executive officer of McDan Group of Companies, Dr. Daniel Mckorley stated that “I want Ghana Tennis to succeed and the junior tennis players to have hope,” hence the need to support this international event. The ITF Grade 5 event is being organized by Tennis Foundation Ghana under the auspices of the Ghana Tennis Federation. TFG Renovates Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts to Host ITF Juniors

Feverish preparations and renovations are ongoing in and around the Tennis Courts of the Accra Sports Stadium. The renovations are being undertaken by Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) as part of preparations to host an International Tennis Federation Grade 5 Tournament in August. Speaking to ghanatennis.org , Mr. Raphael Blebo, Special Projects Manager of TFG said his outfit is investing over $12,000 in the project. The first phase of the project covered the provision of an office with equipment’s which will serve as the command center for the event and also the renovation and modernization of the facilities of convenience and the furnishing of a players' Lounge. The second phase of the project will cover the resurfacing of all 4 Tennis courts at the Stadium to meet ITF Standards. Wheelchair Tennis Launched in Takoradi

Wheelchair Tennis was successfully launched in Takoradi at the GHACEM Tennis Club House, by the Ghana Wheelchair Tennis under the auspices of the Ghana Tennis Federation and International Tennis Federation. 20 Persons with Disabilities at the GHACEM Tennis Court on Friday and Sunday, July 20 and 21, 2018 were trained under the Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund Programs. Participants were taken through the various techniques in playing tennis. There was time for them to practice what they had been taught, with many of the participants already showing prospects of becoming great wheelchair tennis players. Ghana’s McLean Dzidzenyo believes all that stands between him and winning the doubles title is a good dose of self-confidence and being more “street smart”. GTF - Wheelchair Tennis No.1 was frustrated by his first round loss to fourth seed Philip Fielding from Austria in the Men’s Singles at the ongoing Nottingham Wheelchair Tennis Futures Tournament on Tuesday, but turned animated when looking ahead to the doubles event. “I lost the match against Fielding because I beat myself; I was my own worst enemy out there,”  the 30-year-old stated with brutal honesty after he lost 6-1, 6-3 to the Austria, ranked 148. “Yes, it was a tough draw to face the fourth seed in the first round, but I love the challenge of drawing seeds, because it tests you and you learn from every match. McDan Nextgen Begins Training

Ten junior Tennis Players selected from the last year Mcdan Open championship have begun Non-Residential weekly camp at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts. The program, intended to prepare the juvenile players for future international tournament, was put together by the Ghana tennis Federation which was sponsored by Mr. Daniel Mckorley, C.E.O of Mcdan Shipping and logistics. The junior players includs: Winneba duo Lameck Bagerbaseh and Raphael Ankrah and St. Francis Academy in Ashaiman, trio Kenneth Adzokatse, Michael Dosoo and Amos Asante. The rest are Richard Okine and Ishmael Dowuna also from Stadium Tennis Club and Desmond Ayaaba from BabooSports Academy, Tema and Atomic Tennis Club’s Yakubu Abubakir-Lea. TIA holds Tennis Clinic

Tennis In Africa (TIA), a non-governmental organization, last Saturday put together a tennis clinic for youth who have never played tennis, and provided specific drills for those who already play the sport. The event took place at the Police Depot Tennis Facility, Tesano, a suburb of Accra. The event was meant to introduce tennis to youth within the Police Depot community and beyond, while showcasing the performance of TIA kids.  As part of the occasion, program kids were put through a variety of drills to improve specific aspects of their game including serving, return of serve, baseline rallying, approaching the net, aggressive base-liner and counter punching by Coach Yahaya Maccauley, while Coach Charles Tetteh gave the newcomers a taste of tennis by putting them through mini drills such as 'toss and catch', swinging the racquet, body positioning. The future of Ghana Tennis looks promising after a top display of tennis was on show at the just ended National under 14 junior Tennis Championship at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts this weekend. The National under 14 Championship was organized by Tennis Foundation Ghana (TFG) under the auspices of the GTF with support from Tenolf Sports. There was also a boost for tennis transformation when Desmond Ayaaba of Baboo Sports Academy, Tema and Helena Hammond of Stadium tennis Club, Accra emerged as winners for the 3-day tourney. Helena ousted Veronica Antwi 6-2 to win the girls category and in the Boys event Desmond Ayaaba successfully won 6-3 over defeated Winneba based Lemeck Bagerbaseh.  Speaking after receiving her medal, Helena said, “I gave this match my best and I commend my opponent for putting up a great fight. McLean Focused on ITF CUP Glory

It’s been a tough past few days for Ghana wheelchair tennis star McLean Dzidzienyo, but he’s emerged from it more determined than ever to make an impact in this year's International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned Tournament, thus 2018 Nottingham Wheelchair Tennis Futures Tournament scheduled to come off from July 17 to 23 in Nottingham, Great Britain. McLean was knocked out in the first round of the ITF Wheelchair Futures in England last year. But it was always going to be a tough encounter for McLean, coming days after difficult moment of getting sponsorship for the wheelchair tennis championship. “Personally it’s been tough. I haven’t really trained very well, but I need time to get my rhythm going,” said McLean. Fumi outplays Acquah to win Tour 4

Benjamin Fumi on Saturday played the perfect match to defeat Johnson Acquah for the 2018 National Ranking Tour Four trophy at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts. Fumi won 6-3, 6-2, defending the only title he won in 2017 (2017 National Ranking tour 2). Fumi triumphed in one hour 28 minutes. The 2018 edition of the National 12 under Tennis Championship came to an end on Sunday, with Kwasi Frimpong of Baboo Sports Academy, Tema and Tracy Ampah of Tarkwah Tennis Club, Tarkwa emerging winners in the boys and girls event. Tracy Ampah bagged a 7-5 win over Sekina Adams for her first title at the event while Kwasi Frimpong successfully won 6-2 over Isaac Akuaku. A tennis talent to watch Tracy Ampah, the soft-spoken youngster in an interview with tennisghana.org said, “I am happy to come out a winner; it is a good feeling of accomplishment.
