Antwi, Aleona win under 16 Championship
Number seven seed Emmanuel Antwi from Atomic Tennis Club walked away with
singles title in the 2-day National under 16 championship held last weekend at
the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts. Antwi
ousted the number three seed Richard Okine in tough match with scoreline of
7-5(4).
“Today is a day
to be satisfied, to be happy and to have this medal, I really enjoy the 2-day
tournament,” Antwi told the onthelinegh.com.
Antwi, playing in his first national tournament final,
to a 3-1 lead ,before Okine came back to push the opener to a tiebreak, the
tough game could have gone either way but it was Antwi stood tall with his big serves, winning the set 7-6(4)
In the girls under-16 age group, it was an all National
Sports College Tennis Academy, Winneba affair as they dominated in the semifinals
including debutant Nadia Nti who pulled a surprised among her peers but lost to
experience Cindy Aidoo. It was Aloena
Ankrah who emerged the winner, beating Cindy Aidoo 6-4.
Aleona also
said “I had the mindset to come and win it, and I guess it’s the same with
other players. I’m happy to win the tourney”. She added that “so many things
have changed about me since the last time I participated in the national tournament.
My game has improved a lot and I am gaining a lot of experience every day”.
The national under 16 Championship was organized by Tennis Foundation
Ghana under the auspices of the Ghana Tennis Federation National and support
from Tenolf Ghana.
